After twelve years in the business intelligence and data warehousing industry, Calgary resident Brad Sellick decided to make a bold career move into the world of mobile applications. But in order to make that happen - and to get up to speed quickly - Brad would need something of a mobile app primer. And what better way to do this than by testing the apps in the uTest platform?

“I’ve never had a formal ‘QA’ or ‘tester’ role,” said Brad. “My thought was that being involved with uTest and the community would help me gain some formal experience in software testing.”

He was right. After participating in several iPhone releases with testers from around the world (and earning significant money in the process), Brad quickly became well-versed in all things related to mobile apps, including testing, development and usability – skills that would greatly benefit him in his job search.
“The biggest difference between mobile applications and traditional apps is in usability,” he said. “The iPhone platform is significantly different from the web or PC application due to certain restrictions - namely screen size, input and interaction.”

As his job search progresses, Brad continues to strengthen his QA skills by participating in releases, Bug Battles and by interacting with other members of the uTest community.

In their own words...

On reasons for signing up:
I signed up because I was looking for something to do with my spare time, having been laid off earlier in the year. So with uTest, I was able to gain experience testing mobile applications for some really interesting companies. It turned out to be a very positive career move for me.”

On the uTest community:
While it’s rewarding to post bugs, get them approved, and receive money for them, I think my involvement with the community has been the most rewarding part of my uTest experience.”

On his spare time:
In 2007, I participated with the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus at Festival 500 in Newfoundland.”
