Build version means when the testers get the build from the developers side for testing and an \"Id\" is given to it is called Build Version Id..
S/w version means after developing ,Testing& UAT...the s/w which is released to the Customer....and the \"Id\" given to it is called S/w version Id.
If I am wrong, please correct me...

Hi Venny
You are right..
I would also like to add some valuable in it.
Q. How and when build version gets generated?
A. Testers execute a test cycle and assign bunch of bugs to developer and they start fixing it, once it done developer compile it to assign back to tester for fixes verification that time one build no get generated. This is basically used to track the cycle by cycle version of product, like in which build what bug has been fixed. Or a build version is that; one which is still in testing phase. And it occured most frequently than software version no
Q. What is software version No?
A. Software version number only given to the released product. And Software versions are based on builds but not vice versa
Thanks
Jay

Hi Venny
I would like to give one example of buid version and release version.
Open notpad and goto help->about notepad
You can see here version 6.0 (Build:6001)
This means the notepad has compiled 6001 times and sent to tersers for testing and version is 6.0. Thats the reason a good quality application that microsoft provides.
One more thing, you might confuse about the service pack released. The service pack of any application released when some major bug fixes or minor feature enhancement takes place into the application, I do say minor feature enhancement because if major feature enhancement called a new release or next version of application.
Thanks
Jay
