Battle of the Browsers

November 5 – November 12, 2008

The Battle of the Browsers - the first of such uTest competitions - challenged testers to validate the quality of three high-profile browsers: Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.1, and Google Chrome.

Each of these three web browsers were available as betas, giving uTesters a great opportunity to both evaluate them for release worthiness and discover new and interesting bugs in the process.

Over 1,330 uTesters from 68 countries competed to see who could find bugs in the popular web browsers. Over the course of seven days, the uTest community found a total of 672 bugs, identifying 101 of those bugs as “showstoppers." Here a top-line view of the final Bug Battle results:

  • 356 uTesters evaluated Internet Explorer 8 and found 168 bugs, including 9% that were deemed showstoppers
  • 514 uTesters evaluated Firefox 3.1 beta and found 207 bugs, including 24% that were deemed showstoppers
  • 461 uTesters evaluated Chrome and found 297 bugs, including 12% that were deemed showstoppers

When the competition concluded, each tester filled out a survey, ranking each app in terms of usability, intuitiveness and other criteria. As with previous competitions, over $3000 in prize money was awarded for:

  • Top overall tester (based on quality of bugs and feedback)
  • Top novice tester (same criteria)
  • Top US tester
  • Top bugs
  • Top feedback (about the feature set, functionality and usability)
